CAN YOU SWIM WITH A WIG?

WOMEN SWIMMING WITH A WIG

Yes, you can swim while wearing a wig, but it is recommended to take precautions to protect the wig and ensure it stays securely in place.

Chlorine and saltwater can damage wig fibers and shorten their lifespan, so it's often better to use an older or less expensive wig specifically for swimming.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT WIG

Synthetic Wigs:

These are often the better and more affordable option for swimming. They tend to retain their style after air-drying and the colour is less likely to fade from sun or pool chemicals.

Human Hair Wigs:

These can be worn in the water, but they require more intensive aftercare, including deep conditioning, as they can become dry, brittle, and their color can oxidize from sun and water exposure, much like natural hair.

Shorter Styles:

Shorter wigs or those that can be easily tied into a secure braid or ponytail are ideal to minimize tangling and matting caused by water movement.

TIPS FOR SWIMMING WITH A WIG

Secure it firmly: Use a wig grip band underneath the wig for added security. You can also use waterproof glues or tapes, but be sure to test them beforehand and use the appropriate remover afterwards.

Avoid diving: The force of diving or jumping into the water can dislodge a wig, even if it is well-secured. Enter the water slowly to reduce drag.

Minimise tangling: If you have a longer wig, secure it in a low ponytail or a braid before entering the water.

Wash afterward: Immediately after swimming, thoroughly wash the wig with clean water and a wig-specific shampoo to remove salt or chlorine. Follow up with a good quality deep conditioner.

Gently detangle: Always start combing from the ends and work your way up using a wide-tooth comb. Never brush a wet wig, as this can cause stretching and shedding.
